The Lamb Money that Paid for My Wedding Dress

A Wedding on a Budget

The year before our wedding, I was made redundant. It was a challenging time, and we worried we’d have to postpone. But when we really thought about it, we realised neither of us wanted the big, fancy wedding. So, we set out to make it happen on a budget, with some incredible support from family and friends.

Friends, Family, and a Feast

My parents, who are crofters, gave me that year’s lamb money. It helped pay for my wedding dress, a simple but beautiful reminder of their support. They didn’t stop there; they also sourced fresh lobsters, prepared them themselves, and made sure they were cooked to perfection.

We even managed to get the seating at a massive discount as they arrived covered in mud from T in the Park. My family and I scrubbed them down together.

My mum whipped up a giant pot of macaroni cheese for all the guests. My husband’s friend gifted us some gorgeous champagne, and our guests each brought a bottle, adding to the celebration in their own way. My sister and a close friend of my husband’s stepped up as photographers, and my cousin surprised us with a beautiful wedding cake.

My neighbour contributed the most beautiful sunflowers for my wedding bouquet. And our two wonderful neighbours took down the fences, giving us three gardens to hold the celebration.

Asking for Help When It Matters

It was a beautiful day, but it didn’t come together on its own. It was a day made possible by the kindness, generosity, and efforts of those around us, a true team effort.

And that’s what I’ve carried into my business, Odber Virtual. Just like our wedding, growing a business often means knowing when to ask for help, when to reach out, and when to lean on the strengths of others. I believe in the power of community, the kind that steps in with open arms, whether it’s for a wedding or for building a brand.

When you’re ready to grow, whether in life or business, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes, the most meaningful achievements come from a collective effort, a bit of resourcefulness, and the support of those around you.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

I’ve spent years gathering skills and learning the ropes of media marketing so I can offer those insights to my clients. If you’re just starting out or looking to level up, sometimes you need more than sheer determination, you need a network.

We need friends, family, mentors, and a community that believes in us. And as our wedding proved, sometimes the simplest, most genuine connections create the most beautiful outcomes.

What’s one special way your friends or family supported you in a big life moment?
