Your Facebook Account Has Been Suspended!

Imagine waking up one morning, reaching for your phone, and discovering your social media presence has vanished, just like that.

No explanation, no appeal, nothing.

The friendships, connections, and hard work you’ve poured into building an online community on Facebook? Gone.

That’s exactly what happened to me this week when my Facebook account was hacked and suspended.

It was a stark reminder that we can never assume our security, or our audience, is truly guaranteed when we rely on algorithm-based platforms.

Despite having strong passwords from a password manager and two-factor authentication in place, the hackers didn’t just target my Facebook they also attempted to get into my personal email and LinkedIn.

Fortunately, their security measures flagged the unauthorised attempts, allowing me to reset my passwords.

Apart from Facebook, which was swiftly suspended with no option to appeal.

Ironically, the title of one of my posts last week was “Why You Should Never Put All Your Marketing Eggs in Zuckerberg’s Basket. Thankfully, this is not my only channel of communication.

If you have been depending on a single platform for all your outreach, here’s my friendly (and urgent) advice.

Never place all your eggs in one social media basket. Because no matter how ‘free’ and convenient it may seem, you don’t own that platform or your audience data on it.

Building Your Own Audience

Once I lost the initial shock of losing my Facebook account, I realised how critical it is to grow my email list.

At the moment, my list is small, at 50 subscribers with 30 active users, but it’s a foundation I genuinely own.

Email marketing might seem old-fashioned to some, but it remains one of the most reliable, organic methods of reaching people who’ve chosen to hear from you and is now my main traffic source to my website.

Social media can be powerful, but it’s vulnerable. You have no control over sudden algorithm changes or unexpected account suspensions.

Because email marketing is an algorithm-free zone, smaller businesses (and those with smaller audiences) can thrive using direct connections.

While paid ads on Facebook or LinkedIn may work better for larger businesses with higher budgets, email is the personal, cost-effective approach many entrepreneurs overlook.

How to Grow Your Email List

You might be wondering, “How do I even get people to sign up?” Here are a few tried-and-tested ways to organically boost your list.

  1. Reach Out in Person

The next time someone expresses interest in your services at networking events, community meetups, or even casual coffee chats, mention your newsletter. Let them know how valuable it could be for them and follow up with a direct sign-up link.

  2. Pop-Up Offers on Your Website

A simple pop-up offering a newsletter sign-up can work wonders. Offer a brief explanation of what readers can expect, whether it’s tips, industry insights, or special offers.

  3. Free Offer for Signing Up

Tempt people with a free download or mini-course. Because let’s face it, you and I both love a good freebie! This incentive instantly boosts interest and nudges people onto your list.

  4. Customer Email Flow

Set up an automated email sequence that greets new subscribers, introduces your products or services, and encourages deeper engagement. People crave genuine connection and guidance, which email flows can deliver.

  5. Mini Campaigns

These short bursts of themed content or offers can spark renewed interest in your brand. Share behind-the-scenes stories, success tips, or mini challenges that keep readers opening (and looking forward to) your emails.

  6. Exclusive Monthly Discount

Offer a special monthly discount only accessible through email. It’s an incentive for people to stay subscribed and a great way to drive traffic back to your website or online shop.

Losing access to my Facebook account forced me to find a better way to connect, and email marketing became mine.

It’s the personal, direct way to maintain and grow authentic relationships with people who care about what you offer.

Making a Big Impact on a Small Budget

Now that my focus is on expanding my email list, I’ve realised just how powerful it can be for a smaller business to double down on organic reach.

There’s a reason marketers say, “The money is in the list.” Yet, so few entrepreneurs dedicate the time to build and nurture their subscribers.
