The Secret to Choosing the Right Social Media Platform for Your Business

When I first started my business, I was completely overwhelmed. Which platforms should I be posting to? Facebook? Instagram? Pinterest? LinkedIn? The truth is, I had no idea, so I did what most of us do, I tried everything.

For a long time, Facebook was my go-to. It felt comfortable and familiar. I was seeing great engagement but as my business evolved and my audience grew, I realised I needed to experiment. Recently, I’ve been focusing more on LinkedIn, and it’s a whole different world.

The community is engaging, professional, and eager to connect. I’ve found it to be an exciting space for meaningful conversations and opportunities.

But here’s the thing no one tells you, figuring out your perfect platform doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and sometimes a messy one. You won’t know what works until you start posting.

Start Small, Think Big

If you’re just starting your business, the idea of mastering multiple platforms can be daunting. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Start with 1-2 platforms that align with your business goals and where your audience is likely to hang out.

  • Get to know these platforms inside out. Learn what works, experiment with content, and understand what gets your audience clicking, commenting, or sharing.

For example, if you’re a creative selling handmade products, Instagram and Pinterest might be your sweet spot. Love networking and working with B2B clients? LinkedIn should be your go-to.

How to Choose the Right Platform

Not sure where to start? Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Who is your audience?

Think about their age, interests, and where they spend their time online.

  2. What type of content do you love creating?

Are you a whiz with visuals? Instagram and TikTok are your friends. Prefer long-form, educational content? Try LinkedIn or YouTube.

  3. What are your business goals?

Are you building brand awareness, generating leads, or driving sales? Match your goals to the platform’s strengths.

Experiment, Analyse, and Adjust

Once you’ve picked your platforms, start posting!

Create different types of content (this keeps the algorithm happy) videos, images, blog links, or tips and see what resonates. Track your analytics and pay attention to what gets the most engagement.

Don’t be afraid to pivot. Just because one platform works now doesn’t mean it will forever. I’ve moved from being Facebook-focused to finding new life on LinkedIn, and I’m constantly adjusting to what works best for me and my audience.

Why Focus Matters

Focusing on 1-2 platforms not only saves your sanity but also helps you truly understand your audience.

  • What problems do they have?

  • What type of content do they engage with?

  • What motivates them to connect with your business?

When you build this understanding, expanding to new platforms in the future becomes so much easier. You’re no longer guessing, you’re building on a solid foundation.
